SimpleText Enhancer

SimpleText is a wonderfully easy-to-use program that is included with virtually every Mac. Unfortunately, it has a very limited feature set.

SimpleText Enhancer adds both a substantial list of new features and a Tool Bar to SimpleText while making SimpleText even easier to use. In fact, some of the features included with SimpleText Enhancer aren't even available in many word processors and text editors.

SimpleText Enhancer allows you to quickly double space any lines that end with a single return character.

SimpleText Enhancer will count the words in either a text selection or in the entire document.

Both SimpleText Enhancer Tool Bars now contain two glossaries that you can customize.

SimpleText Enhancer's Balloon Help has been updated and improved.

Additional enhancements have been made to SimpleText Enhancer's code.

The Auto-Position feature for the Tool Bar may now be turned off.

When the Auto-Position feature is turned off, a Drag button automatically appears.

The Main Tool Bar has been redesigned to take up less Desktop space -- this makes it easier to use with smaller monitors, including PowerBooks.

The Main Tool Bar has had buttons added to it for setting additional text styles.

Alphanumeric sorts on both Tool Bars may now be made to sort from either a lower to a higher value or from a higher to a lower value.

A Speak button has been added that automatically speaks the selected text.

Balloon Help has been updated and enhanced.

Other New Features Added To SimpleText Include:

With a single Mouse click you can both display all the characters -- including dozens of useful special characters -- included with each font on your system and insert them into your document.

You can now set all four margins when printing from SimpleText.

Most ReadMe documents open-up in SimpleText. When I print these I like to put them in a binder for storage and easy access/reference. I use SimpleText Enhancer to set a margin that prevents printing text over the holes in the paper that is used with binders.

You can now time stamp any file.

You can easily move between all open SimpleText windows with the window-management button.

You can now quickly and easily create a glossary for items you use repeatedly in documents as well as items stored for future access. These stored items can be just a few words, a quotation, or several paragraphs -- you can customize the glossary to fit your needs.

For added convenience, SimpleText Enhancer includes two glossaries.

You can select and insert any one of several pre-configured date formats into your documents with a single click of your Mouse. (Please note that the settings in your Date and Time Control Panel may cause the format actually inserted into your document to differ from the format you selected.)

With one click of your Mouse you can easily adjust your point size as well as view all available point sizes.

With a single Mouse click you get a popup list of all active fonts in their own typefaces.

The name of the font, the point size, and the style of the text you are working with are always displayed.

The P-1 button prints one copy of your document, eliminating the need to navigate the Print Dialog box.

SimpleText Enhancer includes a user-configurable Auto-Save feature which can be directly accessed from the Tool Bar's Auto-Save button.

You can perform Find, Find Again, and Find and Replace actions directly from the Tool Bar (requires SimpleText 1.4 or later).

A ReadMe File Converter Utility is included with SimpleText Enhancer.

By simply dragging a ReadMe file onto the converter, you can convert a read-only file into editable text. This allows you to create a clippings file or copy, print, or edit any part of a ReadMe document.

You may also use the converter to create your own read-only files.

SimpleText Enhancer includes the ability to change a text selection to either upper or lower case.

Both Tool Bars include a WindowShade feature and an Iconify feature (this reduces the Tool Bar to a small icon). Also, you may completely hide either Tool Bar.

You may drag either Tool Bar to any location on your Desktop.

The Tool Bar that is displayed along the right side of a window automatically appears alongside the active SimpleText window. If you need to move a window, this Tool Bar will automatically maintain its proper positon (unless the Auto-Position feature is turned off).

Requirements

A Macintosh computer with System 7.5.3 or later (including Systems 8, 8.1, 8.5, 8.5.1, 8.6, and 9.x) and a 68020 or later processor (including PowerMacs, iMacs, G3, G4, PowerBooks, and Performas).

While SimpleText Enhancer hasn't been tested with any System earlier than 7.5.3, I expect it will work fine going back to System 7.1.
